Thanks to our friends at Nat Geo Wild, we were able to help our rescue partner Mr. Bones & Co. and Rescue the Runway bring some very deserving Harvey survivors from Houston, who are in dire need.

Here is the first of those dogs. Meet GHOST! He is deaf and partially blind, but that doesn’t stop him! Read his harrowing tale below.

If you are interested in adopting GHOST, please contact Mr. Bones & Co!

Hurricane Harvey’s dangerous flood waters swept through Texas in early September, destroying hundreds of thousands of homes. Over 30,000 people were displaced and several thousand animals were left homeless. GHOST was caught in the middle of it all.

Austin Pets Alive! and Houston Pets Alive rescued a combined 3000+ animals, which is why we agreed to take in some of their cases. We planned to take in four heartworm positive dogs and were thrilled to learn two were adopted by local temp fosters and another went to an Iowa rescue, leaving us with one dog, Capone, that we will share more on tomorrow. When our contact at Austin Pets Alive (APA) told us about GHOST just a few days ago, we knew one of these now available spaces in our #oneluckypup program was meant for him.

Before the storm GHOST had a home and what were believed to be owners who would come back for him…except they never did. GHOST was left to fend for himself as his home flooded and was eventually rescued by a boat that heard his cries. He was brought to APA who got in touch with his owner via a microchip and who didn’t seem at all grateful they had found and saved GHOST. In keeping an open mind, the staff assumed the owner may have just been in shock as his house was flooded and ruined. APA offered to put GHOST in boarding until they could get back on their feet. Four weeks passed with no word from the owner and then the number was disconnected. Locals near GHOST’S house stated he never really had a home, was neglected, and always on the streets looking for food and kindness from strangers.

GHOST, a Double Merle Catahoula, 2 years old, also happens to be completely deaf and partially blind. How frightening it must have been for GHOST to be abandoned in a flooded home? When we met him this morning we promised he’d never be abandoned again, and that he will feel safe and loved every single day for the rest of his life.

GHOST, 60lbs., is vaccinated, microchipped, house-trained and Heartworm positive, which we are treating him for and is an easy fix and recovery!
We are incredibly appreciative of The Garden Creative and their Pet Project program that has generously donated towards the care of our Hurricane Harvey dogs! If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation towards GHOST’S medical care costs, you can do so here:
